Chapter Eighteen

HER HEART FLUTTERED WHEN she opened the door to him. For some reason, having the police officer standing in her own home doorway caused her to really notice him as a man. He wore the same woollen overcoat she had seen on him at the cottage crime scene. The fitted coat showed off his sleek frame, and despite the breezy spring day, his hair was tidy, the thick wavy black style looking just slightly out of place. His beard and mustache were trimmed neatly, showing off Khan’s square jaw.

Shannon stepped back and waved him in. “Please come in.”

He bent down to unzip his leather ankle boots and remove them. When straightened up, Shannon wished she could read his face, but his black square-rimmed glasses masked his eyes. He noticed her looking and removed his glasses. “Sorry for the sunglasses. It takes a moment for the transition tint to revert back to clear glass.”

She blinked at the intensity of Khan’s coffee-coloured eyes. “Let me hang up your coat.”

He slipped it off for her to hang, and as she busied herself with that, Khan made his way into the living room. “This is really nice. I love these old houses that have been made into flats. I’m keeping an eye out for one myself.”

She smiled. “As you know, I’m a realtor, and although I don’t normally deal in the rental market, I sometimes do hear of places. I’ll keep an eye open for you. Where are you now?”

“I have a basement apartment in Cobourg.”

“Oh no, that won’t do. I’m sure we can find something nicer than that.”

“It’s not bad, and I’m not there much, anyway.” He sat down on the sofa as she gestured for him to sit. “I often go home on my days off. My folks have a nice house in Brampton, and I like to go home to get stocked up on my favourite foods.”

She laughed. “I like to go home for my favourite foods, too.”

He nodded. “The apple orchard near Colborne.”

“Goodness. What a memory. I don’t even remember telling you that.”

Khan gave a hint of a smile. “You think I don’t listen to you?”

Shannon flushed as the accusation hit home. She still stood and now walked to the kitchen nook. “What can I offer you? Tea or coffee?”

“What are you having?”

“Tea, but I can easily make you a coffee. I have a French press.”

“Tea is good. It’s what I usually take.”

“Green or black?”

“Either is good. Whatever you’re having.”

Shannon put the kettle on and took out her tin of loose-leaf jasmine tea, and a glass teapot with its integrated infuser. As she waited for the kettle to boil, she called out to her guest. “Can I get you a Danish to go with it? I have raspberry or blueberry.”

“No, not for me, thank you. I really shouldn’t be putting you through the trouble to make tea even.”

“It’s no trouble at all.” Why am I fussing like this? He probably wants to just give me his little update and go.
